McKinley high school - 1912 yearbook
horace & James mason
The 1912 yearbook contains no individual pictures for students who weren’t seniors. The underclass group pictures are too small and blurry to identify Horace or James, nor are there any lists of underclass students.
However, there is a list of individual classroom editors that includes James as a part of The Voice’s section about its staff, as well as a group picture of the room editors in which he can be seen in the back row (third from left). Remember to click on the pictures if you want to see them better.
James was a freshman in 1912.

George Petty
George Brown Petty (class of 1913) became an artist known for drawing the "Petty Girl" images used in ads, calendars, and magazines. He's not related to our family, just someone with whom Horace, James and David attended high school.
While at McKinley, Petty was an artist for The Voice. At left is his picture among other members of The Voice’s 1912 staff.
Below are three are examples of his contributions to The Voice, and two examples found on the internet of his Petty Girl ads from the 1940s.
Also notice the paragraph about him on the page above as one of The Voice’s staff artists.
walt disney
Walt Disney also attended McKinley High for a short time (1917-18), and like George Petty was a cartoonist on the school newspaper before dropping out when he was sixteen to join the Army.
Because Disney was too young the Army did not accept him, so he joined the Red Cross.

international peace and the coming war
The First World War began in July, 1914. The United States entered the war in April, 1917. Horace, James and David all served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France (see World War One under the Events section for much more about their military service). Below is the Class Oration on the subject of international peace from the 1912 yearbook.
